Reading Inventory

As always, in January, I make the decision to read a gazillion books. And every January the following year, I look back and realize I didn’t read half of the ones I’d wanted to-- BUT that I read others that just sort of fell into my lap and changed my life. Those are always the best.

 In 2011--

I didn’t read Dosteoevsky’s Crime and Punishment.
But I did read The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls.

I didn’t read The Good Earth by Pearl Buck.
But I did read Wetlands by Charlotte Roche.

I didn’t read all the way through Gravity’s Rainbow by Pynchon, didn’t read Steppenwolf by Hess, and did not read The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck…

I did, however, read:

Every book Virgina Wolfe wrote,
Nearly every book Kurt Vonnegut wrote,
Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited,
Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston,
The Color Purple by Alice Walker,
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
And J.D. Salinger’s Nine Stories, Franny and Zooey, and Raise High the Roofbeams/Carpenters.

So, I figure, not a bad year. Not bad at all.

This year, I’ll read even more. We’ll see what titles I can boast in Januray 2013!

  1. I love when those kind of books fall into our laps at just the right time to read them! I will look forward to your boasting about books again in 2013 as well:-D

  3. That's impressive Laura! I haven't read anything by Kurt or Wolf :(, shame on me. Which of their work do you like the best? I figure I should start out with those....Also, how did you like The Color Purple? I enjoyed it a lot..but at times it was "hard" to read, you know what I mean? Because of the content, but I do like it a lot.

  4. Hi Abbi,

My favorite Kurt Vonnegut book was definitely Slaughterhouse Five. Very engaging and thought-provoking. And my definite favorite for Wolfe is Three Guineas. Check them both out! I just read your blog post. You've given me some titles to check out as well!
