D.L. Dodge is my new writing prompt dealer. You may recall that I used one of her writing prompts earlier last week. D.L. Dodge blogs over at Dodge Writes, and it turns out, she had another trick up her sleeve that I just couldn't pass it up, so here we are--another prompt, another poem.
Here's the prompt:
"I FELT VERY FAR FROM HOME..."
The rule is, you must use this line as the first line in a peice of short prose or poetry. Ready? Set? Go!
Here's my take:
Jeremiah
I felt very far from home.
Aching for Texas,
I used to count the days
until I would see you again,
scrawling digits on the
checkered, vinyl tablecloth
With a ball point pen.
It got tricky after several months,
‘Cause Jeremiah,
that damned old fool,
never did keep a calendar.

ReplyDeleteI like what you did with it too. You could have taken in it in the expected, sad/mournful/wistful direction but instead you walked down the path a few steps and then brought us somewhere funny.
I love prompts, because they're so random and they force your mind to start building around something you haven't already been mulling on and distorting in your head for awhile. I think a prompt can produce something much more fresh, sometimes.
