New Author Interview. Marylynn Bast

Hey people, I'm here once again to introduce you to a great new author! Please meet Marylynn Bast, author of the debut novel in her "Heart of a Wolf" series. The book is called No Remorse. Let's dive in!

Marylynn Bast, author

First off, can you give us a brief little blurb about the first novel in your “Heart of a Wolf” series? What is the central story-line and theme of No Remorse?

No Remorse is a paranormal romance, with a strong female driven plot.

Due to her unusual birth, Amber has abilities no other werewolf has ever possessed. On the run since childhood, the lone wolf avoids contact with other werewolves at all cost, continually moving, constantly looking over her shoulder and always alone.

Everything changes when Amber saves a werewolf from the mere brink of death, Blake, the only werewolf to ever protect her. Love blossoms, but not without tribulations when Amber realizes she must help her new pack rescue a member who is being held hostage by a rival pack.

Warring with emotions of going from lone wolf to the pack leader’s mate, Amber must decide if she is willing to risk Blake’s life to know true family and friendship despite the fact that the Council is hell bent on locating her and will stop at nothing until she is found. Will Amber’s special abilities be enough to keep everyone safe?

Paranormal fantasy is one of the most fascinating genres. What drew you to this genre and what do you think paranormal writing offers you as an author?

I have always written romance. When a friend suggested I try writing a werewolf short story for a contest, Amber’s character was created into a 1500 words. I never submitted the story, but it kept calling to me to keep working on it. I did, and as a result, No Remorse was born. Writing paranormal allows me to stretch the imagination, to take my characters and the readers into another dimension. I can create my own world where my characters can live and grow, and hopefully the readers will enjoy visiting.

Your female character is a werewolf named Amber, who has some very unusual abilities. She’s an independent female, determined to gain equality for her sex in the realm of Lycans. What was it like writing this character? What did you hope to accomplish through Amber?

Writing Amber’s character was fairly easy. I knew I wanted someone who was strong and not afraid to be on her own. Deep down she wants to be loved and accepted, but she is not afraid to forge her place in the world and not give up. I wanted to establish that a woman does not have to be with a man to make her way in the world. It’s nice to have them around for moral support, but it’s not a requirement. We can be strong and independent. Like Amber, we also have to realize that change is sometimes good and we have to learn to trust.

What books have most influenced your writing? Were any of them directly inspirational for this series?

Christine Feehan, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Laurel K. Hamilton have been a big influence on my writing. I think a combination of all three have been a big inspiration for the series. But more so with Kenyon because I want to be able to create a world like she has with the history. I don’t know that I will create my own language, who knows, that may be a challenge I tackle further along in my writing career.

What books are you currently reading?
I have a long TBR list.  I could probably have my nose stuck in a book for three months straight and still not be finished.  My favorite kinds of stories are Vampire, Werewolf, pretty much anything paranormal. Romance with a mystery and action is a plus.

If you had to choose, which author would you consider a mentor?

Kenyon would be my choice as a mentor. From an interview I saw with her, she grew up in an abusive home and has brought herself up and out of that situation. I can relate and would love to learn more from her.

Finally, what would you say to aspiring novelists?

Only you can make your dreams come true. Your hard work and persistence will pay off.  If you want to write, then write. For those who have people saying writing is a waste of time, ignore them and do what makes you happy. Every writer has a story to tell and you will never be happy unless you tell your story. Go for your dream...I did!

    1. I'm slowly working on the next one. I have set myself the deadline to have it done by the end of the year and ready to publish. I'm still on that schedule.

In the mean time, I am getting ready to release "A Justified Kill" the pre-qual of Amber's story in "No Remorse". in "A Justified Kill" Amber has to decide if going against her personal rules of not killing humans would be justified...
