Authors, past and present.

I am often asked what my favorite book of all time is. What a difficult question! Every book I've read has impacted me in a different way. I haven't liked every book I've read, but I've definitely taken something away from it. It made it's mark on me, and the world got a bit bigger with each page. Recently, I was asked this question: if you could meet any one author, from any time period, who would it be? I think that's perhaps I more tricky question than the first. I'm not even close to knowing! I have a top ten, though:

  1. Thomas Hardy --Tess of the D'urbevilles, Jude the Obscure, etc.
  2. Ghada Karmi --In Search of Fatima
  3. Buchi Emecheta --Joys of Motherhood, Second Class Citizen, etc.
  4. Salman Rushdie --Midnight's Children, Satanic Verses, etc.
  5. Sarah Dunant --The Birth of Venus
  6. Lisa M. Diamond --Sexual fluidity: Understanding women's love and desire.
  7. Robert Wrigley --Reign of Snakes, Moon in a Mason Jar
  8. Sylvia Plath --Ariel, The Bell Jar
  9. Simone de Beauvoir --The Second Sex, etc.
  10. Vivian Elliot --*Okay, I'm cheating on this one. She didn't write anything that I know of. She was the estranged wife of the poet, T.S. Eliot*

Okay! Your turn! Who would you meet, if you could?

  1. Interesting question! For a long time, I would have said Ted Dekker, but we have fallen out lately, and now I think our meeting would be more an interegation than a conversation. I could say King David, or possibly Solomon. I would like to say the Apostle Paul, but I would be so intimidated! Although, it would be nice to ask for clarification on certain issues *wink* Perhaps Charlotte Bronte; Villette touched me more deeply than any other book I can think of.

  3. Hi Laura,

I hope I am not intruding too much, but I thought I would try my hand at naming authors I would like to meet. I always like these kinds of lists because they make one think about and reflect on a life of reading. It is surprising to me what comes to mind. So here goes--

    1. Aristotle
    2. Kurt Vonnegut
    3. Paul Auster
    4. Don DeLillo
    5. Homer
    6. Jane Austen
    7. William Blake
    8. Lorrie Moore
    9. Siri Hudsvedt
    10. Yi Fu Tuan

Of course, this list would probably change every day!

  4. Lol, I've never heard of most of the authors everyone's listing - not as much of a book nerd as I thought? I'll have to try harder :P
